Fly fishing is the preferred type of fishing at Fish On Lodge. The Nushagak River and its’ tributaries offer some of the best fly fishing there is in Alaska. We don’t
supply fly rods for every client at this time, but we do have some rods that clients can use if they want to try them. Species available to fish include: King Salmon, Chum Salmon, Sockeye
Salmon, Silver Salmon, and Pink Salmon (even years), Rainbows, Arctic Grayling, Dolly Varden, Northern Pike, and Arctic Char.
From mid June to mid July the best fishing is for King Salmon, Chum
Salmon, and Sockeye Salmon. Rainbows, grayling, and pike are always available if clients want to spend an afternoon targeting them instead of salmon for a change of pace.
Late July starts the run of Silver Salmon and Pink Salmon (even years only) into the Nushagak watershed. These two species are the owners’ personal favorites to fly fish
for. “There’s nothing like being in a school of silvers with a fly rod in your hand! They take a special touch, but once hooked they go hog wild!” Cody McCanna.
Late August until early October is an amazing time to fish for rainbows, grayling, and arctic char on the upper Nushagak River. They are fat and sassy from feeding on salmon
eggs and flesh. They can be caught on a variety of flies and they are feeding heavy to get ready for the long winter. The upper Nushagak can be fished at any time throughout the season with
great success as well.
Equipment: All fishermen want to know about fly selection, rod weights, and types of lines that they should bring for each species of fish. Fish On Lodge does
supply most of the flies that you will need while on your trip. However, most fly fishermen still like to bring an assortment of their own flies. All fly fishermen know it is better to fish
the flies that come from their own vices as well. The best part is that most salmon flies are easy patterns that can be tied by any novice that is willing to give it a try. We can even tie
some flies at the lodge while you’re here on your trip in the evening.
We can discuss rod weights, lines, tippets, leaders, and flies once you decide to book at a trip with us.
